PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This programme is aimed at training nurses for planning, management and education in nursing or in nursing services at hospitals and community level. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Minimum qualification for admission shall be matriculation exemption or equivalent.
  • Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council as a general nurse and midwife or general and psychiatric nurse, and as proof of registration with any South African Nursing Association.
  • Registration shall be maintained throughout the course.
  • Must have at least 2 years experience as professional nurse.

    RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Students should be registered nurses and registered midwives or registered nurse and Psychiatric nurse. Courses done in other universities receive credit on entry.
    At least 2 years clinical experience.

    Students who have a Comprehensive 4 year Diploma or a Comprehensive 4 year Degree (general nurse, psychiatric nurse, community health nurse and midwife) will only take 2 semesters in Nursing Management, select modules in Community Health Nursing Science and in Psychiatric Nursing.

    This option is open only to candidates who are already registered as Community Health Nurse. In view of the Primary Health Care approach of the government.

    On completion of the study registered nurses will manage nursing units with focus on personnel recruitment, selections and placement, conflict resolution among staff members, staff development, budgeting, management of patient care in outside hospital and the management of hospital service and community services. Exhibit high level of decision making, ethical and administrative insight and participate in research. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    First year: -> 1 paper of 3 hours duration for each course.
    -> an Osce for Nursing Administration & Community Health
    Second year: -> 1 paper of 3 hours duration for each course.
    ->In addition an Osce for Nursing Administration & Community Health Nursing
    Continuous evaluation through tests, assignments and group work contributes towards a year mark. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Two internal examiners moderate the first year examination papers. External examiners are used for moderation of the final examination paper and the Diploma is registerable with the South African Nursing Council. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
