PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To accredit in-depth, specialised and advanced academic and professional study of aspects of management in education by ETD practitioners at the highest level. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
NQF level 8 (840 credits);

A master 's degree with specialization in Management in Education (240 credits); OR
a master 's degree PLUS the Postgraduate Diploma with specialization in Management of Education. The PhD (CW) Management in Education is a logical extension of the master's degree in management in education;
or

RPL equivalent. Evidence of applied competence must be assessed by a constituted RPL committee of suitably qualified faculty staff members through at least a written report which should include a portfolio to prove educational experience at the required level and oral defence of such a report. The RPL committee decision will be
ratified by Senate.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Learners (i. e. educators as researchers) at this level will produce a professionally printed and bound research thesis that shows evidence of:

1. A research plan which should include astute formulation of topic and meaningful parameters, incorporate significant variables, operational objectives, hypotheses and/or research problems

2. Suitable, well-motivated, and scientifically acceptable methods and procedures of research, and a research approach that is theoretically well-founded and clearly conceptualised and a systematically organised and critically accountable research design

3. A chapter division that shows appropriate range and compass of content, creativity and originality, based on well-found assumptions

4. A study of literature that testifies to balance, knowledge and sound interpretation and that is relevant, topical and recent, with a n adequate selection in which primary sources have precedence over secondary sources

5. A summary in which the conclusions and deductions express the spirit of the study meaningfully and conclusively

6. Findings and recommendations that are viable, accountable and concur with the objectives /research problem hypotheses, with inducement for improvement and/or refinement of practice, and suitable for publication

7. Recommendations for further research

8. Contribution to the extension /expansion of existing knowledge through independent, original and critical thinking.


Additional assessment criteria include:
  • Linguistic correctness and quality
  • Stylistic expression
  • Technical presentation and layout, as stipulated in the university calendar for PhD ED (CW) theses.

    It is important to note that the scope and magnitude (compass) of the research thesis for the PHD(ED)(CW)are more or less two-thirds (240 credits: 2400 notional hours) of that of the fully fledged PHD(ED)(R) thesis (360 credits: 3600 notional hours). However, the same criteria and SAQA level descriptors of NQF level 8 apply.


    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


    For the course work modules, evidence will be primarily (through not exclusively) of a written kind and will include demonstration of academic debate and argument, written research reports and articles and defence of research findings (which may include oral defence). An individual supervisor, with the option o co-supervisors if and when required, will be appointed by Senate. Rigorous, continuous, formative supervision will ensure that assessment criteria are met. Educators as researchers will demonstrate the ability to independent specialised and advanced educational research, show in-depth knowledge and understanding of complex and specialised areas, and come to accountable, reliable, verifiable and publishable conclusions. Oral defence of the research findings will be an option in such cases where internal and external assessors should so require. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This is the highest level at which educators can be qualified on the NQF framework. The qualification will, however, allow for entry into postdoctoral and other programmes and research projects nationally an d internationally that will lead to ongoing professional and academic development of educators in the field of management in education as life-long learners. The qualification will also further extend professional and academic career opportunities in the field of management in education, locally and abroad, that will ultimately lead to the improvement and transformation o f existing educational practice globally. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    University Senate and Council (internally). External standards are set (but not moderated ) by the employer as described in the Norms and Standards for Educators 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Assessors of course work will hold a PhD or education-related doctor 's degree in the identified field of specialisation. The supervisor / internal assessor will be an academic with an education-related PhD or doctor's degree with proven research experience and/or training. Publication output is recommended. An assessment panel, existing of a none examining chairperson, the supervisor, at least one more internal assessor and two external assessors, suitably qualified and experienced with proven research and publication output in the area of specialization, will be appointed
    by Senate.
