PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard will be useful for people who have to clear hot material blockages in cement and lime manufacturing applications. This unit standard was developed due to the highly dangerous nature of this task and the fact that a number of co-ordinating activities have to be performed in the process of clearing such blockages. Persons credited with this unit standard are able to
  • identify/detect blockages;
  • assess the potential hazard;
  • prepare to clear blockages;
  • clear blockages;
  • conduct post-clearing activities and
  • demonstrate knowledge of blockage clearing methods and the application of safe work procedures.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Appropriate knowledge and competence relating to manufacturing process, equipment and plant
  • Appropriate knowledge and competence relating to instrumentation (temperature, pressure, amperage)

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • All areas of the process where material reaches substantially high temperatures in the range of 100?C to 10000C plus.
  • Cold material blockage clearing will be dealt with under normal plant operating unit standards.

    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria
