PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a cleaning services environment. Qualifying learners are able to strip and seal hard and resilient floors in a commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, food handling, domestic and health care cleaning environment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The learner has the speaking and listening ability equal to an NQF Level 1 standard and/or any other communication skill that will enable him/her to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard.
The learner will have completed the following unit standards:
  • Identify surfaces and soilage and cleaning procedures (No. 12515)
  • Use chemicals in cleaning procedures (No. 12517)
  • Vacuum clean wet surfaces
  • Basic Safety - SHE 1
  • Buff, burnish and scrub hard and resilient floors (No. 12533).

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
    1. The scope of this unit standard is for any person who strips and seals hard and resilient floor surfaces using water-based sealing products.
    2. Hard floors in the context of this unit standard refer to but are not limited to concrete, terrazzo, terracotta, quarry tiles, slate, granite, marble and wood.
    3. Resilient floors in the context of this unit standard includes, but is not limited to, vinyl, cushioned vinyl, asphalt, linoleum and profiled rubber.
    4. The level and complexity assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is limited in range, but requires critical thinking, problem solving ability, and an ability to work with others as a member of a team. The responsibility level is higher than level 1 as it includes the coordination of machines and people.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
Definition of terms within this unit standard

    1. Alkaline strippers: This is a stripper with a pH in excess of 13
    2. Access flooring These are floors with removable panels which, when removed, give access to under-floor electrical cabling. Water entering the under-floor cabling could cause severe damage. Such floors are typically found in computer environments.
    3. Linoleum floors These are floor coverings manufactured from vegetable oils and are severely damaged by conventional high pH alkaline strippers. Specialised strippers with a maximum pH of 10 must be used to strip linoleum floors. The correct choice of sealing products that can be removed by these specialised strippers is important.
    4. Slow speed single disc machine This is a single disc machine fitted with a pad driving disc, with a maximum rotational speed of 200 R.P.M.
    5. Water-sensitive floors These are floors such as unsealed wood and cork, which absorb water and swell. This may result in damage to the floor.
    6. Method for dry stripping: It is the systematic removal of the polish by using a single disk machine in overlapping straight lines.. Each stripping pass should overlap the previous pass by 50%. Dry stripping may not remove all the layers of polish from the floor. Dry stripping is 80% mechanical removal and 20% chemical reaction.
    7. Method for wet stripping: It is the systematic removal of the polish by using a single disk machine in overlapping straight lines. Each stripping pass should overlap the previous pass by 50%. Wet stripping removes all the layers and is 80% chemical reaction and 20% mechanical removal.
