PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners will be able to generate chlorine dioxide by operating, monitoring and controlling the chlorine dioxide generation process whilst adhering to Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality requirements. They also understand the fundamental process principles of generating chlorine dioxide for pulp bleaching. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners attempting this unit standard are required to read, understand and interpret operating manuals which are of a technical nature. It is therefore required that they have achieved NQF level 2 or equivalent accreditation. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
This unit standard covers the process from receiving high concentrate chemicals to generated chlorine dioxide for bleaching pulp.

Process Variables:
Concentration of electrolyte, pH, chloride, chlorine and chlorine dioxide concentration in fresh gas and off gas, oxygen concentration in cell gas, chemical reactions, temperature and pressure.

Properties:
Electrolyte, chlorate, off-gas, sodium dichromate, chlorine dioxide liquor and hydrogen chloride.
