PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of the learning for this Unit Standard is that learners are able to operate (apply) equipment, material and tools in a way that meets health and safety, live event and technical production industry requirements. When credited, the learner`s applied competence will be to safely operate or apply equipment, material and tools according to manufacturers` recommendations and industry norms and standards.

Recognition or Prior Learning (RPL) must be applied should the learner provide sufficient evidence that he/she has attained the competencies outlined in this Unit Standard.

Learners credited with this unit standard are capable of:
  • Checking the equipment, material and tools for correct functionality prior to the start of rehearsals.
  • Rehearsing the use of the equipment, material and tools in accordance with event-specific requirements.
  • Setting-up equipment plot-schedules along with the respective cues.
  • Using equipment, material and tools correctly throughout live events.
  • Storing, cleaning, adjusting and repairing equipment, material and tools under his/her control.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learning assumed to be in place prior to the learner attempting this Unit Standard is:
  • Numeracy and Literacy skills equivalent to NQF 3.
  • A working knowledge of health and safety as required by the OH&S Act as amended.
  • Working at height practice and safety.
  • Safe operation of scissor and boom access equipment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Applied competence in ONE of the following areas of application must be credited to achieve this Unit Standard:
  • Stage (Setting and Structures)
  • Audio/Visual (Lighting, Sound and Video)
  • Styling (Costumes, Makeup, Properties and Decor)
  • Special Effects (Pyrotechnics, Lasers, Water and Fire)

    The application chosen must be applied in all learning towards all Unit Standards attempted for the qualification.

    Repair extends to assembly level only, and not component level.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment, material and tools are checked, prior to rehearsals, for functionality to operate according to manufacturers` recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Use of the equipment, material and tools are rehearsed, in accordance with live event requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment, material and tools are prepared, according to manufacturers` recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Learner`s own preparatory schedule and activities promote the delivery of a successful live event. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set-up equipment plot-schedules, in preparation for a live event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Plot-schedules are compiled in accordance with industry norms and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cues are used in the preparation of plot schedules, accurately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Plot schedules are adapted to suit requirements of other parties involved in the live event. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Plot schedules include some contingency plans for flexibility when required.

    Use technical production equipment, material and tools in live events.

    Technical production is delivered according to the rehearsed agreement with other parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment, material and tools is operated according to manufacturers` recommendations and industry norms and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Unprepared incidents during the event is compensated for by minimising the effect of the "glitch". 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Learner`s own behaviour is participatory, professional and according to industry norms and standards throughout. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Store, clean, adjust and repair equipment, material and tools in preparation for future use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment, material and tools are correctly stored, cleaned, adjusted and repaired according to industry norms and standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Any discrepancies to the norm are reported accurately to relevant supervisors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    No equipment, material and tools are damaged or broken by the learner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Housekeeping rules and regulations are maintained throughout. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All safety standards are adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The learner due to an action or inaction on his/her part sustains no injuries.
