This unit standard is for people who need to operate X-ray units or plants safely in production or development facilitates to verify properties of explosive, hazardous or non-hazardous materials.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the X-ray unit or plant process,
  • Prepare to operate the X-ray unit or plant,
  • Operate the X-ray unit or plant,
  • Perform end of X-ray procedures.

    This unit will contribute to the full development of the learner within the field of manufacturing by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the fields of manufacturing and technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and progression within the manufacturing and technology context.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The X-ray facility, equipment and utilities are identified according to purpose, function and position in the plant or process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    X-ray facility and equipment refer to power supply, vessels, filters, films, film developing unit, tools and utilities.
    The utilities may refer to fixer, developer and type of films.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operating principles of equipment in the X-ray unit or plant are described according to standard operating principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The production and or development purposes and uses of the X-ray unit or plant are identified and according to site specific uses and applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of x-ray operations on personal and environmental safety is explained according to standard operating procedures.

    Prepare to operate the X-ray unit or plant.

    Personal preparation is done according to standard operating procedures.

    Personal preparation refers to practices that ensure personal, product and environment safety.

    The work environment and equipment are prepared according to standard operating procedures.

    Preparation refers to cleaning, pre-start up checks and settings on the equipment.

    The materials is received, checked and maintained according to standard operating procedures.

    Receiving refers to correct batch number, sufficient quantity, substance and checking if the materials are quality released according to work-site requirements. Maintaining refers to all the work-site requirements in order to maintain the quality of the materials. Materials preparation may refer to conditioning, heat treatment or special storage conditions.
