PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard have a demonstrating knowledge of the theory of relaxing hair, the processes of hair relaxing, chemicals, products and tools that are used to relax hair and the skills to successfully offer and perform hair relaxing services on clients. The learner will also be able to conduct a full after care service for the client.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing workstation and client for a hair relaxing service.
  • Analysing the hair and scalp and select appropriate tools, equipment and products for a hair relaxing service.
  • Preparing hair for relaxing service.
  • Performing hair relaxing application techniques.
  • Performing a neutralizing procedure.
  • Discussing, explaining and applying the use of after care products and services. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Hair relaxing will include hair relaxing using sodium hydroxide or lithium or calcium or hair straightening using thioglycolate (Lye or No lye relaxers).
  • Professional manner will include aspects such as ethical standards, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, tone of voice, posture and personal appearance.
  • Neutralising will include colour indicator/signal cream, liquid and neutralizing shampoo.
  • The degree of curl removed will indicate that a relaxer, S-curl or blowout is performed.
  • Safety precautions will include protection of client's clothes and face, testing of water temperature to ensure client comfort, control of water pressure, protection of client's head against banging or scratching, using clean towels and tools, sharp instruments are handled with care, manufacturer's instructions are followed, barrier products are applied around hairline, hands are protected by wearing gloves, lids on chemicals are replaced immediately after use, jewellery is removed before application of chemicals, chemicals are not mixed in metal containers and maximum processing time is not exceeded.

    The client's hair is analysed through questioning and physical examination.

    Information and recommendations regarding the hair relaxing service are captured on the client's record card and the release form is completed in full.

    The appropriate tools and equipment are selected based on the results of the analysis of the hair and scalp.

    The appropriate strength of relaxer is selected and prepared based on hair texture and the results of the analysis of the hair and scalp and client requirements.

    A barrier cream is applied to the hair line and scalp according to the hair relaxing procedure and manufacturer's instructions.
