PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has as its core purpose, qualifying learners who will demonstrate ethical and professional conduct in diplomatic service. They will gain self-knowledge and determine their own suitability to cope with a career in a foreign environment. They will apply the Batho Pele principles, develop appropriate thinking strategies; determine strategies to adjust to new environments and cultures and study the code of conduct of the DFA.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Develop a base-line knowledge of self in a diplomatic career context.
  • Demonstrate social responsibilities.
  • Apply the Batho Pele principles.
  • Identify coping strategies in a foreign environment.
  • Know and apply the DFA code of conduct.
  • Develop thinking skills and strategies.

    Assessment Methods and Integrated Assessment:

    Ensure that assessment covers the specific outcomes, the critical cross-field outcomes and the essential embedded knowledge. Assessment activities should be appropriate to the context and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment.

    A range of assessment methods should be used, including direct observation, product sample, simulation, questioning (verbal or written) and testimony (portfolio collection of evidence).

    Integrated assessment: It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together thus reducing the number of assessment "events". Ensure that the commonalities that exist between the unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.
