PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who are disabled. It is intended to be part of an induction programme or pre work course to introduce disabled employees to the work or community environment. Programmes based on this Unit Standard should empower disabled learners to operate comfortably in their own life situations.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing own disability and the effect of natural limitations on own life.
  • Identifying risks and challenges in own situation.
  • Investigating possibilities for personal empowerment.
  • Investigating ways of dealing with own disability. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Permanent, temporary and recurring disabilities.
  • Hearing, sight, physical and mental disabilities.
  • Risks, both upside and downside, at home, work and in social situations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe own disability and the effect of the natural limitations on own life. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The nature of the disability is explained and an indication is given of whether the condition is temporary, permanent or likely to change. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes, but is not limited to, amputees, cerebral palsy, occupational injuries, multiple disabilities and diseases or conditions that result in physical disability.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of the disability on day-to-day life is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Own strengths and opportunities are identified based on self-reflection. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify risks and challenges in own situation.

    The concept of risk in own life choices is explained with reference to upside and downside risk.

    The rights and responsibilities of disabled people are identified with reference to the South African Constitution.

    Available support structures are investigated in own situation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways in which the individual can participate in the adaptation or rehabilitation process are outlined for the specific disability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Avenues available for redress in case of discrimination or a grievance are identified for people with a disability.

    Techniques for handling discrimination and isolation are demonstrated in role-play.
