PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation and client for a back and neck massage. They are able to record required information and assessed the skin and underlying structures in order to perform the message. Learners are able to perform and manage the massage on the back and neck according set standards

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation for a relaxing back and neck massage according to organisational and hygienic requirements
  • Recording all relevant information on the Client Record Card for immediate use and to update for future consultations
  • Preparing the area to be treated
  • Performing and managing a relaxing massage on the back and neck in accordance with organisational and hygiene requirements
  • Discussing and explaining the use of aftercare products and services 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners assessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against the National Certificate in Beauty: Manicure and Pedicure or Aesthetic Consultancy or Make-up Consultancy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Client confirmation must be verbal or written
  • A basic hygiene procedure includes the personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools, equipment, plinth / chair, area and trolley
  • Appropriate positioning of client includes raising / lower the head, bolstering knees
  • Client comfort includes positioning, temperature, relaxation, lighting, noise levels
  • Contra-indications include sunburn, cuts and abrasions, swelling, inflamed or infected areas, pregnant women, injury, unknown abnormality in underlying structures
  • Precautions include bruises, recent operations
  • Precautions applicable to products used for the massage should be adhered to
  • Receiving the client will include supply with appropriate protective clothing and positioning them comfortably
  • Lifestyle includes occupation, exercise, stress levels and leisure activities

    A relaxing neck and back massage sequence is performed which includes the five classical movements and identified to clients' needs

    The massage is conducted using the correct speed, posture and rhythm

    The product residue is removed according to organisational requirements
