PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for learners embarking on a career in fundraising, or those already working in the fundraising sector.

In particular, this Unit Standard will enable the learner to:
  • Investigate how individuals may be attracted to contribute to a cause
  • Determine which South African Corporate Donors may be interested in a cause
  • Determine which international funding agencies may be interested in a cause
  • Examine the Internet as a fundraising tool
  • Investigate the possibilities of cause-related marketing for a fundraising organisation
  • Investigate the possibilities of in-kind donations.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Investigate the possibility of attracting individual donors to a cause. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Letters of appeal for donations by an organisation are analysed to determine who the target audience was. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responses to the letters of appeal for four fundraising venture are analysed to determine a donor profile for each. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Conclusions are made about the type of organisations that are supported by specific groups of people. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    People are grouped by age, sex, income group, language.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The involvement of alumni in fundraising is determined for three organisations/fundraising ventures that have alumni as part of their target market. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A report is compiled indicating which is the best target group for the various types of fundraising organisations in the country. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of organisations includes, but is not limited to those in the fields of education, old age, orphans, HIV/AIDS, Abuse centre, the poor, feeding schemes.

    Determine which South African Corporate Donors may be interested in a cause.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A database of Corporate South African Donors is set up using information from fundraising organisations, and the media. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Corporate South African donors are classified in terms of the type of fundraising organisation/venture they support. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A shortlist of possible corporate Donors for a specific organisation/venture is compiled to maximize the effectiveness of a fundraising appeal. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine which international funding agencies may be interested in a cause. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A list of international funding agencies operating in South Africa is compiled using information obtained from the SA Revenue Service, the Department of Social Welfare, the Department of Foreign Affairs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A list of international organisations that have made donations to organisations in South Africa is compiled from government sources and from the records of fundraising organisations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    International donor organisations and foreign companies supporting South African causes are classified according to the type of activity/organisation they support and the findings presented in tabular form. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of organisations includes, but is not limited to those in the fields of education, old age, orphans, HIV/AIDS, Abuse centre, the poor, feeding schemes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A shortlist of international donors is drawn up for a specific organisation/fundraising venture.

    A procedure is developed for surfing the Internet for fundraising possibilities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A list of websites for potential fundraising opportunities is compiled following a website search. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A method of approach for an organisation to use the internet for fundraising is developed for a specific fundraising venture/organisation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Investigate the possibilities of cause-related marketing for a fundraising organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Ten examples of cause-related marketing in South Africa are listed and their relevance to fundraising activities explained orally. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An example of cause-related marketing in a certain type of organisation is analysed and reported on in a presentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The possibilities of cause-related marketing for an organisation for fundraising are established and presented in a report. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Investigate the possibilities of in-kind donations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A schedule of the types and potential sources of in-kind donations is compiled in tabular form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The way in which in-kind donations may be obtained by a specific organisation is determined and a list of drawn up for later use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An attempt is made to secure in-kind donations for an organisation by approaching various organisations. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical.
  • Assessors must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that represents the sector in which the learner is employed and which has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • The mechanisms and requirements for moderation should be applied in accordance with the requirements of the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment should include both formative and summative assessment.
