This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This Unit Standard enables learners to identify and understand society and environment interaction issues in a local context. Learners will be able to engage with these interaction issues by identifying the different levels of impact as well as the different role-players and parties affected by these impacts. It will also enable learners to facilitate such social and environment interaction issues in a community context.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and describing society and environment interactions
  • Identifying and describing the factors contributing to society and environment interactions
  • Describing processes to assist communities to identify society and environment interactions in a local context

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Communication, literacy and numeracy skills at NQF level 3 or equivalent.

It would be useful to have basic knowledge about the environment and society and how they interact.

This Unit Standard does not deal with facilitating appropriate responses to identified society and environment interactions and related issues. It is important that engagement with a community does not stop at the stage of analysis, so that practitioners should ensure that this Unit Standard is used in conjunction with "Facilitate social participatory processes" or equivalent.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
For the purposes of community-based facilitation of social participation, a basic knowledge only is required of social processes and dynamics as well as of environmental processes and systems, in relation to the local context. However, sufficient detail is required to enable community members to identify the components of a society and environment interaction and to understand the linkages and dynamics to a level that supports effective action towards resolving the issue.

Society and environment interactions can be seen simply as human actions that interact with the natural resources around us in ways that that have an impact (positive or negative) on people's lives and/or on the natural resources. Some of these interactions can result from simple actions at a household level, or they may be result from larger structures in society and the way they are set up ort operate, for example, a particular economic system, a land tenure policy, a development strategy, or the way legislation is defined.

Society and environment interactions are complex, and include most human activities because what we do has an impact on natural resources and processes. The focus is less on people as individuals, and more on structures in society e.g. business, government, communities etc. and how decisions taken in one can impact on other parts of society and on the environment with consequences for people.
