PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic insight into the overall shape of the layout of the Bible and of the contents and background of selected examples of biblical books.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the major divisions and contents of the Bible. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • To include a broad overview of the major divisions of the Bible
  • To require an outline of the background and contents of a range of books in the Bible. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the major divisions of the Bible. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Include all books of the Bible, bearing in mind traditional Christian classifications of Biblical books (particularly the Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant lists of authoritative books). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The major divisions of the Old Testament are listed by referring to the Bible and other Sources such as the Torah, the Prophets and Writings in the Old Testament. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The major divisions in the New Testament are listed by referring to the Bible, more specifically to the Gospels, Acts, Letters and the Apocalyptic in the New Testament. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    All the books in each division of the Bible are identified and listed in the order in which they appear in the Bible. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Outline the background of the books of the Bible.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The historical, political and social background against which the biblical books were written is explained by reference to the bible. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Significant sites, people and events are identified through biblical references and the use of maps and other visual aids. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Outline the content of the books of the Bible. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    'Content' includes events and characters that contribute substantially towards the book, and main themes or emphases.

    The books of the Bible in which major events are to be found are identified through biblical studies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The books of the bible in which major characters are found are identified through biblical study.

    Providers of learning towards this unit standard will need to meet the accreditation requirements of the relevant ETQA.
