PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is that learners are capable of controlling traffic in various situations. Controlled traffic is an important component of public service delivery and ensures safe use of South African roads. By describing the characteristics of incidents, corrective action can be taken to prevent further damage, and proactive solutions can be found to prevent future recurrence.

This unit standard also allows for transformation with the traffic policing profession, as learners become models for other learners. This attracts quality people and allows for the aspirations of people to be part of the traffic policing profession. The recognition of prior learning will formalise informal and non-formal leaning and learners will be able to obtain credits towards a national qualification.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Preparing for different traffic control situations.
  • Controlling traffic from a stationary position.
  • Using different types of equipment appropriately to support traffic control situations.
  • Assessing accidents and incidents.
  • Making prompt judgements of appropriate actions and communications.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The competence attained to achieve this unit standard must be applied in any temporal context, that is, day or night. Included are various incidents, such as accidents, road hazards, dangerous goods spills, animals, crime, etc. Competence includes controlling both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Different types of traffic control are required, including scholar patrol, point duty, and control with equipment and vehicles.
