PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to ensure that credited learners are able to capture, assess and maintain information on a national traffic information system. The use of national traffic information systems to regulate and monitor driving licences, permits, motor vehicle ownership, and to authorise vehicle roadworthiness, enhances safety and security in society. Achieving the competencies in this unit standard will enable the individual to contribute towards economic transformation by means of crime prevention, law enforcement, protection of property and the generation of revenue.

This unit standard also allows for transformation with the traffic policing profession, as learners become models for other learners. This attracts quality people and allows for the aspirations of people to be part of the traffic policing profession. The recognition of prior learning will formalise informal and non-formal leaning and learners will be able to obtain credits towards a national qualification.

Learners credited against this unit standard are capable of:
  • Assessing customer requirements.
  • Identifying applicants based on acceptable identification as prescribed by law.
  • Identifying transaction types and associated documentation.
  • Authenticating relevant documentation.
  • Accessing, creating and maintaining official records as prescribed by law and using the relevant procedures.

    Authenticating documents implies ensuring that documentation is not fraudulent, is correct and is complete. Official records include printed face value documents, receipts, and computer records. Acceptable documents means as prescribed by the relevant legislation. Learners should demonstrate competence within their permissible range of operations (for example, within restrictions for accessing certain functions of the information system). They must be able to interact directly with others, as well as using correspondence and telephonic means.
