In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner is capable of:
Integrating knowledge and understanding of factors affecting concrete specifications and concreting materials with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with concrete production and monitoring the quality of concrete produced. Demonstrate knowledge of: Use of concrete trial mix tables, Concrete slump test procedures, Concrete test cube procedures, Concrete properties, Techniques for mixing concrete, Different grades of concrete and aggregate sizes, correct use of admixtures and the effect of admixtures on stripping times

The competencies contained in this unit standard form part of the Elective learning of this qualification and extend beyond the mechanical completion of tasks associated with mixing concrete and contribute towards the professional development of the learner by equipping him/her with enhanced knowledge and skills for adjusting concrete mix design when supervising precast concreting activities ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with health and safety legislation and completed in accordance with specifications and industry standards.

This unit standard further contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience, thereby enhancing the employability and career prospects of learners within the Civil Engineering Construction field.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The following competencies will support the learner in the achievement of this unit standard:
Language and Communication in an official language at NQF Level 3
Language and Communication in a second official language at NQF Level 2
Mathematics literacy at NQF Level 3
Computer literacy at NQF Level 2
Read and interpret drawings and specifications at NQF Level 4.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The typical scope of this unit standard:

Assessment against this unit standard must be undertaken on site. On site refers to a wide range of building and construction environments within which trade skills are required, and includes concrete production and concrete construction sites.

Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of the factors affecting the concrete specification.
OUTCOME RANGE
Includes environmental, exposure, legal, structural and other aspects affecting the requirements for concreting.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The clients brief / specification for the concrete is understood

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The critical criteria for the specification of the concrete is understood and explained in terms of quality of product and cost.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Special materials required are identified in terms of durability, economy or other reasons
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Special materials include but are not limited to: granulated ground blast furnace slag, fly ash, condensed silica fume, metakaolin, chemical admixtures and pigments.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Select the most appropriate available materials.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Identify the suitable available concreting materials, obtain or test to determine those physical properties for mix design and suitability, and their unit cost, delivered to site.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Determine which of the available materials comply with the specification and any other requirements

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Supervise production of concrete and concreting operations.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Select the most economical of these materials and design and make a trial mix or mixes

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Adjust the mix to obtain the optimum fresh and hardened concrete properties and the most economical mix in terms of overall concreting costs (not just material costs). Confirm the cube strengths at, at least 7 and 28 days.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Calculate mix proportions and report both one bag and one cubic metre mixes.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Conduct fresh concrete test (slump).

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The required test is conducted in accordance with normal concrete testing procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The results of the test are recorded and reported in accordance with work place requirements

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Prepare and test a concrete cube.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The moulds are prepared filled and cured in accordance with normal concrete testing procedures.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The required test is conducted and results reported in accordance with normal concrete testing procedures when the concrete reaches required maturity.
