PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The qualifying learner is capable of: Integrating knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations, protective paints and compounds for the preparation of steel surfaces techniques for the removal and replacement of defective structural steel members with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with the maintenance of steel structures in accordance with safety legislation and site procedures. The competencies contained in this unit standard form part of the Elective learning of this qualification and extend beyond the mechanical completion of tasks associated with the maintenance of steel structures and contributes towards the professional development of the learner by equipping him/her with enhanced knowledge and skills for the effective planning, organising and controlling of general steel structural maintenance activities in a construction context. This unit standard further contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience, thereby enhancing the employability and career prospects of learners within the Civil Engineering Construction field.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Supplementary information: Load bearing scaffolding is classified as scaffolding that supports loads of more than 240 kilograms/sq m The Load Bearing scaffolding Team Leader shall only be appointed in writing to lead a load bearing scaffolding team once he has completed the training required in SABS 085 Ed. 3 16.2.5.1, i.e. Learners will have demonstrated competence in basic inspection of ordinary access scaffolds and leading various teams of access scaffolding erectors under various construction site conditions The high and often fatal risks associated with work conducted at heights well above ground level necessitates that learners fulfill the following criteria contained in SABS 085 Ed. 3 16.2.5.2 prior to attempting this unit standard and, His/her total access scaffolding experience exceeds two years and six months. Due to the fact that SABS 0295 (Part 2) and Construction Regulations are still not published, changes to this unit standard can be expected.
