PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of:
Integrating knowledge and understanding of safety legislation, soil types, plant and equipment and construction site procedures with skills for planning, organising and controlling a range of activities associated with piling operations.

The competencies contained in this unit standard form part of the Elective learning of this qualification and extend beyond the mechanical completion of tasks associated with piling operations and contribute towards the professional development of the learner by equipping him/her with enhanced knowledge and skills for the effective supervision of piling operations that are carried out in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Regulations and industry requirements for cost-effective and quality workmanship completed within prescribed deadlines.

This unit standard further contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners will be able to undergo RPL-assessment and receive recognition for previous learning and experience, thereby enhancing the employability and career prospects of learners within the Civil Engineering Construction field.

    The typical scope of this unit standard:
  • Plant and Equipment used in piling operations includes but is not limited to: large Auger drilling rig, bore rig, driven displacement cast in-situ,
  • Range of soil analysis includes but is not limited to: bearing capacity. hard or soft soil structure, presence of subsurface water, presence of rock layers or boulders
  • Risk assessment includes but is not limited to: Safety of plant, equipment and personnel, location of surrounding structures and services and their impact on the safety of operations to be carried out, placement of materials

    Risk assessment is carried out and procedures for the safe execution of works are compiled
