PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to people who wish to participate actively in preparing people for
baptism in their own faith community, and enable others to participate.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe the way in which their faith community celebrates baptism
  • Outline the way in which baptism is described in the new testament
  • List old testament passages that point to baptism and describe the links
  • Explain and evaluate the meaning of baptism in their faith community in the light of the biblical descriptions 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 3 and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard:
  • Baptism is studied primarily in relation to the learner's own faith community.
  • Providers may include comparative studies with different faith communities, especially where learners are from a variety of faith communities.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the way in which baptism is celebrated in their community. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes the preparation for the service, vessels used, the arrangement of the space in which the baptism is celebrated, the use of music, roles of various participants, special clothing worn (if any).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Baptism is described as practised in own faith community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The distinctive features of the way baptism is celebrated is described according to practices in own faith community.

    Includes the use of (for example) incense, hymns, water, oil etc

    Outline the way in which baptism is described in the New Testament.

    New Testament texts which refer to baptism are identified with reference to the bible. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    At least five New Testament texts.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The major features of the New Testament description of baptism are described with reference to the identified texts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    List Old Testament passages that point to baptism.

    Old Testament texts which refer to baptism are identified with reference to the bible.

    The major features of the Old Testament's prefigurement of baptism are described with reference to the identified texts. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain and evaluate the meaning of baptism in their faith community in the light of the biblical descriptions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The meaning of baptism is explored is in accordance with the theological tradition of the learner's faith community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ways in which baptism is related to own faith community is explored with reference to the relationship between God, the church and the world. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The links between the OT and NT passages and the practice of their own faith community are accurately described and explained with reference to relevant biblical texts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The way in which baptism is celebrated in a particular community is evaluated with reference to the relevant biblical passages and the norms for the learner's faith tradition.

It is interpreted in different ways in different Christian communities, and for the purpose of this unity standard is interpreted primarily in the context of the learner's own faith community.
