The person credited with this unit standard will be able to apply the fundamental knowledge of HIV & AIDS to their everyday life.

The learner who requests RPL will be required to meet the all criteria set out under the assessment criteria and assessment notes in this standard. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
This unit standard should form an integral part of any learning about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's) and TB as they are all very closely linked.

Fundamental knowledge pertaining to HIV&AIDS within the context of the learner's everyday environment.

Define HIV and the ways in which it is prevented and spread.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
HIV is explained in terms of how it relates to AIDS and other opportunistic infections. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
Spread of HIV is explained in terms of promotive and preventive actions. 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
Dealing with blood, sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners, use of condoms, intravenous drugs, mother to child.
 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
Interpersonal skills that help to reduce the risk of HIV infection are described in terms of their role in the prevention of HIV.

The use of post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after exposure to the HI virus is explained in terms of the benefits and when the treatment must be taken.
