PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who check and record all products loaded into containers according to standard work procedures, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Collect despatch sheets
  • Ensure container is prepared for loading
  • Instruct loading team to load product according to the loading sheet 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at an NQF level 1;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing production process in their workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of the Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment that can be described as charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
  • All the personnel involved in all activities of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturer.
  • All the material that is handled and processed in this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacture.
  • All the company's work procedures and safety regulations relating to this work area of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.
  • All the relevant OSHACT stipulations, which have bearing on, charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing and all other activities in this work area.

    The context of the Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF level 3 in the activity of charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect despatch sheets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All personal protective equipment is worn in accordance with OSH regulations and work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Ensure all tools and equipment are working to safety requirements and if a problem is detected the Foreman is notified as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Despatch sheets are collected from the dispatch office as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Despatch sheets are written clearly and legibly on the prescribed documents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    All abnormalities are queried to avoid misunderstanding as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Container for despatch loading is identified as per loading documentation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Container number is recorded in appropriate space on despatch sheet as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Ensure container is prepared for loading.

    The container is clean and prepared for the loading of product as per loading instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All damages have been recorded on the loading sheet as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Instruct loading team to load product according to the loading sheet. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Loading team is shown the product to be loaded and instructed to load product in appropriate container as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Loading team is instructed to load in the container in the correct sequence and required method as per loading sheets. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Check and record loaded product. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    All loaded product is re-checked prior to despatch as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Loading sheet is marked to indicate that it has been re-checked as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Completed loading sheets are returned to the despatch office for further processing. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his/ her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    Charcoal manufacturing principles and practical application in a charcoal and/or briquette manufacturing environment, in addition with knowledge of Safety/Environmental/Health issues. 

    UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
    Operate as an efficient unit in carrying out the productions plan/ programme in the loading bay.

    Collect and record data for his/her line manager, as and when requested, regarding the activities carried out in the loading bay.

    Listen, understand instructions and verbally report in an effective manner to his/her line manager.
