PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can control production in a Wood Products plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Initiate production runs
  • Monitor and record the progress of production and quality of output
  • Adapt production process if relevant to achieve output targets 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 3;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of a Wood Products plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The equipment, tools and instruments and other aids for production in the relevant work area in the Wood Products plant.
  • The personnel responsible for controlling and performing the activities in the relevant work area in the Wood Products plant.
  • The production management principles relevant to a Wood Products plant
  • The raw materials handled in the relevant activities.
  • The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of items.
  • The work procedures relevant to this activity.
  • The environmental management principles relevant to this activity.
  • The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this activity.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 4 competency

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 4, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a Wood Products manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 4 to 6.

    Initiate production runs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The organisation's programmed production runs are correctly initiated at the appropriate time to produce the required products to meet customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The person responsible for this activity arranges the correct raw material supply, processing equipment and deployment of workers at the appropriate time to produce the required products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct products with the prescribed specifications and volumes are produced to satisfy customers' demands. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    These products are produced at the prescribed work rate while complying with the required specifications as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor and record the progress of production and quality of output. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The progress of production and quality of output is monitored and recorded as prescribed and assures that correct and accurate records are available for the relevant analyses at the appropriate time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The person responsible for this activity performs it correctly and at the appropriate time which results in a production process being controlled as prescribed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The product of this activity is records which are of the required standard of accuracy, which are available at the appropriate time and which are detailed in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    This activity is performed at the prescribed work rate and its results meet the required standards as detailed in the work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Adapt production process if relevant to achieve output targets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The adaptation of a production run to achieve output targets is correctly performed as prescribed, when necessary, achieving the intended changes at the time specified in the work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The responsible person correctly institutes the required changes to achieve the prescribed targets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The adapted production programme achieves the prescribed production targets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The adaptation of the production programme is performed at the prescribed work rate and is of the required standard as detailed in the work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    A demonstrated understanding of:

    i Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 4 requirements;
    ii Competency in controlling the production management activity in a Wood Products plant, equivalent to NQF Level 4 requirements;
    iii The NQF Level 4 learner's responsibilities regarding the safety and health stipulations, the workplace procedures and the environmental management principles relevant to wood product;
    iv Knowledge of monitoring and recording the production process in the relevant work area in a Wood Products plant;
    v Knowledge of adapting production programmes when necessary, to achieve prescribed production targets. 

    UNIT STANDARD DEVELOPMENTAL OUTCOME 
  • Evaluate the status of reported problems and report verbally or in writing to the relevant responsible person.
  • Assist in leading the workers in the relevant work area.
  • Assist in carrying out the production plan / programme for the relevant work area.
  • Assist in collecting and recording data collected by workers.

    iii) Strictly according to the organisation's work place procedures.
