PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can control the processing of debarked and air seasoned poles for the wood preservation process, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Control the setting up of the different pieces of equipment to produce the required products
  • Manage the process of transferring the poles received from the seasoning process to the relevant work area for inspection and classification
  • Inspect, classify and collect batches of cambium and bark free poles for the relevant processes
  • Control the processing of the relevant poles to produce the required products 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

    i) Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2;
    ii) An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace;
    iii) Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    NOTE: "Processing" in this case can mean trimming, drilling, shaving or "scarfing", proof grading, and manufacturing post and rail products, garden accoutrements and mining timber. "Proof grading" is provided for in the Lumber Milling unit standards

    a) The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

    i. The pole processing area in the wood preservation plant with all the equipment, tools and instruments used there. This area can have several workplaces as spelled out in the note under Title above.
    ii. The personnel responsible for managing and performing the task of processing poles.
    iii. The raw materials handled in this specific work area.
    iv. The specifications to which the relevant products must be processed
    v. The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of items.
    vi. The work procedures relevant to this work area.
    vii. The environmental management principles relevant to this work area.
    viii. The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this work area.

    b) The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency.

    c) The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Control the setting up of the different pieces of equipment to produce the required products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The control of the preparation of the equipment and deployment of workers for the processing activities is managed as prescribed to produce the required products to the prescribed specifications as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The preparation is carried out effectively and efficiently to facilitate that the equipment is set up according to work instructions and that workers have been deployed to the area as detailed in the staffing schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that products are produced at the designed production rate while complying with the prescribed specifications as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Checks are in place to facilitate that the set up process is performed at the prescribed work rate and to the specified work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Manage the process of transferring the poles received from the seasoning process to the relevant work area for inspection and classification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Management processes are in place to facilitate that the correct poles are transferred from the seasoning yard at the appropriate time and delivered to the prescribed workstation to apply the relevant processing for the desired products as per the production plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Checks are in place to facilitate the availability of a correctly organised team of workers at the right time to deliver the required volume of the correct poles to the designated work station as detailed in the work instructions and staffing schedule. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect, classify and collect batches of cambium and bark free poles for the relevant processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedure followed for inspection for bark and cambium remnants, classification and assembling of batches of poles for delivery to the designated workstations, facilitates that the specified poles are delivered as per production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Inspections are carried out to facilitate that the batches of poles meet the required surface quality, sizes and grades for processing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required volumes of poles with the prescribed size, grade and surface quality are produced according to production requirements as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The process of inspection and overseeing the removal of remnants of bark and cambium is performed to the required standards at the prescribed work rate as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Control the processing of the relevant poles to produce the required products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct control of the pole processing activities results in the production of a range of the required products of which the physical characteristics comply with the requirements of the relevant specifications for each of these products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The relevant products produced comply with the prescribed specifications for these products as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The production rate and quality of product achieved in these activities comply with the prescribed criteria for these aspects of the process as detailed in the work instructions. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.
