PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This unit standard is for people who can manage the pole peeling process in a wood preservation plant, whilst adhering to other agreed standards pertaining to performance, safety, quality, and the environment. People credited with this unit standard are able to:

Supervise the preparation for the bark removal process.

Manage the debarking process.

Inspect debarked poles and logs and logs.

Check that the debarking area is kept clean and safe.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:

Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF 2.

An understanding of the basic activities of a wood preservation plant's policies and procedures of the relevant workplace.

Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF 2.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

Note:

This process involves the peeling, or turning, of the poles into perfect cylindrical form, usually for the post and rail type of product.

The scope of this Unit Standard covers:

The relevant pole peeling area in the wood preservation plant with all the equipment, tools and instruments used there.

The personnel responsible for managing and performing the pole peeling process in this work area.

The raw materials handled in this specific work area.

The specifications for peeled poles.

The ergonomic principles for the effective and efficient performance of the manual handling of items.

The work procedures relevant to this work area.

The environmental management principles relevant to this work area.

The work procedures relevant to this work area.

The OSH Act stipulations relevant to this work area.

The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner to an NQF Level 3 competency.

The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a wood preservation manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1

Supervise the preparation for the pole peeling process.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The preparation of equipment and labour for the peeling process is supervised to facilitate that these will be in the prescribed condition for operation as detailed in the work instructions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Checks are carried out to facilitate that the preparation process is performed at the prescribed work rate while achieving the required standards of preparedness as detailed in the work instructions.

Manage the peeling process.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The peeling process is managed correctly to facilitate that it produces poles with the prescribed dimensions and distribution of sapwood, to enable preservative treatment to be performed to the prescribed standard as detailed in the work instructions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The peeling production process is overseen to facilitate that the peeled poles meet the quality standard.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Checks are in place to facilitate that the process is performed at the prescribed work rate achieving the prescribed standards of operation as detailed in the work instructions.

Inspect poles.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Inspections are carried out to check that only poles complying with the relevant specifications undergo further treatment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The person/s responsible for this inspection perform the task as prescribed in work instructions.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Inspections are conducted to check that the peeled poles comply with the required specifications regarding dimension and sapwood distribution.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

Checks are carried out to facilitate that the process is performed at the prescribed work rate achieving the required quality of poles and logs as detailed in the work instructions.

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4

Ensure that the peeling area is kept clean and safe.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Management procedures are in place to facilitate that the cleanliness and safety conditions of the peeling area comply with the OSH Act.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The peeling area is kept clean and safe in order to meet the requirements of the OSH Act.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

Checks are carried out to facilitate that the process is performed at the prescribed work rate while achieving the set company standards.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.

Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA.

Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.

Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.

Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.

The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures.

A demonstrated understanding of:

Competency in communication and mathematical skills equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.

Competency in managing the pole peeling activity in the wood preservation plant, equivalent to NQF Level 3 requirements.

Workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to NQF Level 3 activities in the wood preservation plant.
