PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who can control Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board grading process in Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board Plant


People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Check that Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board grading facility is prepared (Range: Visual grading facilities - grading table, chain, moisture meters, measuring equipment, marking materials and equipment, mechanical grading facilities)
  • Check that the products to be graded have been correctly identified, collected and presented at the grading facility (Range: Dried Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board storage facilities, moving equipment, receiving area)
  • Control the actual grading process (Range: relevant grading rules, readings, measurement, pre-test markings where relevant, grader's markings, marking equipment and materials)
  • Oversee the correct sorting and assembling into parcels of graded Veneer/ Plywood/ Block Board with similar dimensions and grader's markings (Range: dimensions, grader's marking, parcelling facilities)
  • Oversee the correct stacking, stamping/ marking and strapping of graded and marked products into prescribed size parcels for despatch

    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competency in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to that of a person who has qualified in these subjects at NQF Level 2;
  • An understanding of the basic activities of the veneer and plywood manufacturing process and procedures of the relevant workplace;
  • Knowledge and skills in the relevant workplace procedures, health and safety measures equivalent to NQF level 2 requirements. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment that covers the Grading Facilities, with all its equipment, tools and instruments.
  • The people involved in the Grading Facilities.
  • The spread of raw material and products produced by the operation.
  • The general work procedures, safety and health measures and environmental management principles relevant to the Grading Facilities.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the veneer and plywood manufacturing activity.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because it entails the training of a novice in a veneer and plywood manufacturing environment and is a progression of the skills acquired from Levels 3 to 5.

    The process of checking of this facility is done in the prescribed manner.

    The Inspection process is carried out as per work instructions.

    The process of checking is done within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions.

    Checks are carried out in the prescribed manner to ensure that the correct products are assembled as per work instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The graded products are assembled into parcels of similar dimensions as per work instructions as per work instructions

    The overseeing process is performed within the prescribed time limits as per work instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Oversee the correct stacking, stamping/ marking and strapping of graded and marked products into prescribed size parcels for despatch.

    The graded and marked products are stacked, stamped/marked and strapped in the prescribed manner as per work instructions.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    An individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, his immediate superior in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for his / her assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the
    relevant Education and Training Quality Assurer (FIETA ETQA) through formative and summative assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.

    The relevant NSB and SGB should be notified of any feedback related to this qualification.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor with the relevant ETQA
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable
  • The FIETA ETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures
