PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to perform minor maintenance tasks on pipeline operations equipment and updating the maintenance management systems, thereby ensuring the timeous, safe and continuous operation of the pipeline network by transporting petroleum products efficiently, thus contributing positively to the Southern African economy.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the pipeline operations.

The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the Pipeline Transport environment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Performance must be carried out:
  • In a controlled and safe environment.

    When entrance is required to HT substations, the learner must have a valid electrical safety certificate.

    For the purpose of this unit standard, minor maintenance may include, but is not limited to the following tasks:

    Valves:
  • Test critical valves for leaks.
  • Test fourway valve for functionality.
  • Lubricate valves.

    Receivers and launchers:
  • Lubricate, check and/or replace door o-rings.
  • Check and/or replace dowdry seal.

    Provers:
  • Check lining.
  • Lubricate, check and/or replace door o-rings.

    Spheres (mainline and prover):
  • Inflate.
  • Size.
  • Check condition.

    Standby plant and fire suppression system:
  • Test-run standby plant and fire suppression system.
  • Check oil and fuel levels of standby plant and fire suppression system.

    Pumps and motors:
  • Top up bearing oil levels.
  • Check bearing seals for leaks.
  • Check lube pump resevoir oil levels.
  • Top up lube oil.
  • Drain water from lube pump resevoir.

    Strainers:
  • Remove, clean and replace strainer baskets at Intake Depots.
  • Lubricate o-ring/gasket on strainer lid.

    Coalleasor filter:
  • Replace coalleasor filters.

    Office equipment (e.g. fax machines, photocopiers, printers, etc.):
  • Change rolls on fax machines.
  • Load photocopiers and printers with paper.
  • Change cartridges of photocopiers and printers.

    Tanks (intermixture, accumulator):
