PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This learner will be able to perform plumbing functions listed in this unit standard under supervision.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Installing a One Pipe above ground drainage system, a Single Stack above ground drainage system, sanitary fittings as well as testing and maintaining above Ground Drainage Systems.

    These learning outcomes form part of the Elective learning in the "National Certificate in Construction".

    This unit standard will contribute to the development of more professional construction workers.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the construction environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and / or equivalent:
  • ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 English literacy and numeracy. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard:
  • The installation, testing and maintenance of above ground drainage systems and sanitary fixtures are according to the following qualitative specifications:
    > SABS 0252: 1994 Water supply and drainage for Buildings
    > Part 2: Drainage Installations for Buildings
    > SABS 0400: 1990 Code of Practice for the Application of the National Building Regulations, Part P: Drainage
  • Soil and waste and vent pipes include: uPVC, galvanised mild steel (GMS), cast iron, HDPE.
  • Vertical pipes are fitted plumb, horizontal pipes are installed to specified falls. Pipes are secured and supported using holder bats.
  • Soil, waste and vent fittings include: holder bats, reducers, junctions, bends, couplings, adaptors, vent cowls, vent valves etc.
  • Sanitary fixtures include: water closet pans (wall-hung and pedestal), urinals (stall and wall-hung), sinks, baths, jetted baths (spa baths), bidets, wash-hand basins, showers, wash troughs and salad preparation bowls.
  • Above ground drainage fittings include: floor drains and food waste disposers.
  • Tests for discharge pipes and ventilation pipes shall be done according to the requirements of SABS 0400.
