PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Recognise, create and describe various patterns and functional relationships.
  • Investigate observed patterns and analyse mathematical situations and structures.
  • Investigate problems in mathematical and real-life situations.
  • Determine, analyse and interpret equivalence of different descriptions of the same relationships.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are competent in working with numbers, operations and relationships between numbers at ABET level 2, and that they are competent to read and write at ABET level 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Recognise, create and describe various patterns and functional relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Simple increasing and decreasing number patterns are extended to or from at least 10000.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Own patterns are created using numbers, physical objects and picture drawings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The way in which repeatedly increasing and decreasing patterns are generated is described using real examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Generalisations are identified, expressed and verified and used to make predictions e.g. doubling a number then doubling again is the same as multiplying by four.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Investigate observed patterns and analyse mathematical situations and structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Output and input values of simple number patterns are determined.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Situations involving inverse relationships are investigated and described e.g. the longer we drive, the less petrol we have in the tank.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Appropriate symbolic representations are used to describe mathematical situations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Patterns are illustrated using tools such as tables and flow-diagrams.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Investigate problems in mathematical and real-life situations.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Problems including contexts that relate to human rights, social, economic, cultural, health and environmental issues.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Information is extracted and recorded from tables and graphs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information is represented using graphs where appropriate axes are provided.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Patterns found in natural and cultural artefacts of different cultures and times are investigated e.g. in nature, art and architecture.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The effect of change in one variable on change in a second variable is investigated e.g. the distance travelled over time.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Determine, analyse and interpret equivalence of different descriptions of the same relationships.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Relationships between operations are identified and used to solve problems e.g. multiplication as the inverse of division.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Algebraic properties are identified and used to solve problems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Algebraic properties are used to simplify numerical expressions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Includes commutative and associative properties.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
