PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Manufacturing Engineering and Technology field.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of custody transfer w.r.t trade metrology principles, applications and be able to perform the relevant calculations.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the Measurement Control and Instrumentation environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Applies to all measurements performed for the purposes of compliance to the Trade Metrology regulations.
  • The range of measurement variables includes but is not limited to pressure, temperature, flow, density, level, etc.
  • The range of metered variables could include but is not limited to volume, mass, and electricity.
  • Safety precautions include the use of personal protective equipment, electrical and fire protection, process isolation etc.
  • Requirements include but are not limited to Statutory requirements, National Standards, client agreements and manufacturers specifications.

    Understand custody transfer requirements with reference to the Trade Metrology Act.

    Applications that require conformance to the Trade Metrology Act are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Purpose of seals on metering equipment and the role of the verification officer is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Data security measures are applied and managed using an auditable process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The difference in accuracy between metering equipment and process equipment is explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the function of equipment in a metering system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The factorisation of a meter to achieve an accurate result is correctly explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of a reference standard in achieving factorisation is correctly explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The role of a dynamic compensation device in a metering system is correctly explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform metering calculations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The impact of process variables and environmental conditions on the compensation factors are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Volume or Mass is correctly calculated taking into account the relevant compensation factors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Uncertainty calculations are performed to determine the error in measurement. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
