PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for persons who will be involved in shore-based fishing operations where they will be responsible for the provision of services and crew for identified vessels.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Calculate consumption of consumables
  • Conduct vessel husbandry operations
  • Prepare and apply manning requirements

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3
  • Communication at NQF Level 3

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Services includes but not limited to the replenishment of bunkers, stores water and spares. Personal services include, but not limited to signing on and off the articles, and ship legal obligations under the Merchant Shipping Act.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Calculate consumption of consumables. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Consumables may include but not limited to: victuals, water, stores, fuelling, safety equipment materials, spares, fishing gear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stock consumption is assessed as per the allocation plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Required stock is authorised and ordered as per defined administration procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correct stock quantities are supplied to the vessel as per the defined company standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct vessel husbandry operations.

    Services include: Crane, transport, maintenance and repairs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Needs are identified to determine the requirements for vessel husbandry as per defined company standing orders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Husbandry activities are prioritised and scheduled as per operational existences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Husbandry operations are managed according to the defined schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Pre-sailing activity sheet is signed off to meet the vessel requirements to signify vessel acceptance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Required equipment is authorised and ordered as per needs and defined administration procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Husbandry services are planned, arranged and provided for vessel roll out needs whilst vessels are out at sea.

    Prepare and apply manning requirements. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Manning requirements include those of Minimum Manning Certificate and SAMSA Statutory Certificates.

    Manning needs are identified as per industry, company and legislative requirements.

    Skilled and qualified manning availability is identified to meet the specified needs.
