PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable the enrolled auxiliary nurse to participate in and maintain a helping conversation with a patient or colleague.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Initiate a helping interaction.
  • Encourage verbalisation from the other person.
  • Deal effectively with feelings and issues.
  • Terminate a helping conversation.

    Learners will function within institutional policies related to specific occupational settings and the parameters of the capabilities of the learner at this level. Enrolled auxiliary nurse learners will also function within the scope of practice for enrolled auxiliary nurses as formulated by the South African Nursing Council.
