Competency in this unit standard will enable persons who have the relevant responsibility to monitor, report and advise on the application of safety and health principles regarding electricity in a work place.

  • Knowledge regarding the features and nature of an electric circuit in the workplace.
  • Knowledge regarding hazards associated with electricity and the application of the correct first-aid procedures in the work place.
  • Knowledge pertaining to the controls regarding electricity, and prevention of injuries at the workplace.

    Basic knowledge regarding the types of electrical currents is demonstrated.

    Basic knowledge regarding the use of single and three phase electrical systems in the work place is demonstrated.

    Basic knowledge regarding power generation in the work place is demonstrated. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge regarding hazards associated with electricity and the application of the correct first-aid procedures in the work place.

    The hazards and associated risks that may be encountered with electricity in the workplace are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct first-aid procedures in the event of electrical shock are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The correct emergency preparedness procedures in the event of electrical shock. are described. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate knowledge and the application of control measures regarding electricity to prevent injuries in the workplace.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Knowledge pertaining to health and safety principles, according to specified requirements in the work place is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Specific practical control measures with regard to electricity in the work place are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correct selection, use and application of Personal Protective Equipment is demonstrated.

    Collect, organize and critically evaluate information. When working with electricity, the individual will have to collect and organise information in such a way that he/she will be able to evaluate it and make decisions. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Communicate effectively using visual, mathematics and language skills in the modes of oral and written presentations. Remedial action resulting from working with electricity, must be communicated to all relevant persons.

    Use science and technology effectively and critically (showing responsibility toward the environment and health of others). Science and technology are used at the appropriate level, e.g. in interpreting data.
