PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standards is for learners in the law enforcement environment who manage the apprehension and detention of person in custody in a policing environment

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the detention procedures of persons.
  • Take care of a person whilst in police detention.
  • Transfer and transport a person.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the detention and apprehension procedures of persons. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Procedures refer to:
  • Receiving, booking, charging, apprehending and releasing a person but excludes the caring for the person.

    Detention procedures are explained in terms of the well being of a person who has been detained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Apprehension procedures are explained in terms of the well being of a person who has been apprehended. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Releasing procedures are explained in terms the well being of a person who has been released. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Documentation as prescribed by the organisation is completed in terms of the detaining, apprehending and releasing of a person.

    Safety precautions prescribed by the organisation are explained in order to ensure safety of oneself and others.

    Take care of a person whilst in police detention. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Taking care of a person refers to the physical well being of all persons in custody for who policing officials are responsible for.

    The rights of persons in custody are evaluated according to the Constitution of South Africa.

    Documentation as prescribed by the organisation is completed in terms of the caring for a person.

    Transferring procedures are explained in order to maintain the physical well being of a person who is transferred.

    Transporting procedures are explained in order to maintain the physical well being of a person who is transported. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Transferring and transporting procedures are applied during a transfer or an transport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety precautions prescribed by the organisation are demonstrated during transferring and transporting of a person. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Documentation as prescribed by the organisation is completed in terms of the transferring and transporting of a person.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
