PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the law enforcement environment who demonstrate understanding of the principles of common law crimes and statutory law offences.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Differentiate between statutory and common-law crimes.
  • Determine whether a crime has been committed in a given case study.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Differentiate between statutory and common-law crimes.

    Common law crimes refer to but are not limited to:
  • Crimes against life
  • Crimes against property
  • Crimes against the Administration of justice
  • Crimes against the safety of the state
  • Sexual offences and crimes against morality

    Statutory crimes refer to:
  • All crimes created by legislation

    Statutory crimes are defined in terms of the South African law context.

    Common law crimes are defined in terms of the South African law context.

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
