PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who need to interact with historical sources in order to interpret a past event or investigate a case. It will be useful for learners in Local, Regional and National government, museums, claims assessors, fraud investigators, politicians, travel and tourism, Non-government Organisations (NGOs), crime investigators, and for personal development of the informed public.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Determining a framework for a historical investigation.
  • Identifying and accessing relevant sources.
  • Interrogating evidence for validity and credibility.
  • Interpreting the past from selected sources.
  • Presenting research findings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is historical research.

    Determine a framework for a historical investigation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Relevant questions are asked to determine the direction of the proposed research. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nature of information required to answer the research questions is identified in order to select relevant sources. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Historical sources include, but are not limited to, documents, texts, and other printed sources, oral sources, artefacts buildings, machinery, items of technology, monuments, memorabilia and art works.

    Identify and access relevant sources.
