PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the electrical engineering field who will be required to maintain and repair fuel gas domestic appliances.

A person credited with this unit standard will be capable of:
  • Defining the essential requirements for the safe operation of gas appliances.
  • Demonstrating the understanding of the combustion capabilities of various fuel gases used in domestic appliances.
  • Describing and explaining the operating principles of domestic gas appliances.
  • Applying safe servicing procedures applicable to domestic gas appliances.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering field by providing recognition, further mobility and portability within the field of appliance repair. The skills knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth within the appliance repair environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Domestic gas appliances are limited to domestic gas ovens, hobs, fridges, burners, water heaters, space heaters, camping equipment and driers.
  • Domestic" refers to appliances that operate on pressures up to 5kPa.
  • Types of gas: LPG, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), natural gas.
  • This unit standard excludes gas-pipe line installations and is applicable only from the isolation point closest to the appliance.

    A brief outline of legislation, standards and codes of practice relevant to servicing of gas appliances is given in terms of the impact on appliance repair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The essential safety design, construction and operating requirements for gas appliances are stated according to relevant legislation and manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The essential installation safety requirements for gas appliances are stated according to relevant legislation and manufacturer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The essential commissioning requirements for gas appliances are stated as per manufacturer's requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Understand the fuel gases used in domestic appliances and the principles of their combustion.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The gases commonly used for fuel are described with reference to their principal constituents, method of distribution, and physical characteristics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Combustion, including explosive combustion, are described in terms of combustion principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The requirements for flueing arrangements are stated as per manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Incomplete combustion is described in terms of its products, characteristics and symptoms with reference to their consequences for the health of people and animals.

    Describe and explain the operating principles of domestic gas appliances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic electrical sources of igniting combustion are described in terms of combustion principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Devices used for control and protection, including temperature control, are identified and their functions described as per operations specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appliance operation is explained with the aid of sketches showing all major components, and with reference to operation under normal and abnormal conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The requirements for efficient combustion and operation are stated according to design and construction specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate understanding of safe servicing procedures applicable to domestic gas appliances.

    Disconnection procedures of gas appliances from the gas supply are described with reference to health and safety standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Testing procedures following servicing are described with reference to operational testing, and health and safety procedures.

    Reconnection procedures of gas appliances from the gas supply are described with reference to health and safety standards.
