PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner will be able to understand the establishment of a vineyard with reference to the spacing, layout and planting of vines.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of a vineyard establishment.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of treating vines before planting takes place.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of planting vines.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of a vineyard establishment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Factors influencing the soil properties are identified within scope of work. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors may refer to cultivation, water penetration, water retention, leaching and fertility.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The impact of soil preparation is explained in relation to the harvested yield. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The reasons for selecting a specific site are explained with reference to topography, wind, sun facing and soil type. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The principles of vine spacing are explained in relation to criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Vine spacing may refer to include soil water, wind, sunlight, the optimum utilization of available nutrients and vigour for the production of quality grapes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The factors that induce weak and/or vigorous growth are identified according to criteria. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors mat refer to soil fertility, soil water and slope on the spacing of vines.

    6. The influence of wind, slope and sunlight exposure on the row direction is explained according to criteria.

    7. Methods of squaring of land are explained according to vineyard layout. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Squaring methods used are explained in relation to of plant lines/strains.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    8. The principles and procedures for planting vines are explained in reference to the time of planting and condition of the soil.

    Demonstrate an understanding of treating vines before planting takes place.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The procedures for storing vines to prevent dry-out are explained according to workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The preparation of vines before planting is explained in relation to workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The preparation of vines shall include hot water treatment.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of planting vines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The principles and procedures for planting vines are explained with reference to the time of planting and condition of the soil. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The method used to make a planting hole and planting the vines is demonstrated in a vineyard. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Internal moderation.
  • External moderation.
  • An assessor, accredited by the relevant ETQA, will assess the learner`s competency.
  • Assessment procedures will be supplied by the ETQA in alignment with NSB requirements.
  • All assessment activities must be fair, so that all candidates have equal opportunities. Activities must be free of gender, ethnic or other bias.
  • Assessment and moderation procedures, activities and tools must be transparent, affordable and support development within the field, sub-field and NQF.
  • Questions and answers to determine theoretical knowledge are expected.
  • Examination of an assessment portfolio.
  • Reporting skills are demonstrated by effective communication, using verbal (language) and/or writing skills.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the appropriate ETQA.
