PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for people working independently as environmental education practitioners in a structured environment. Work contexts may include environmental education centres, heritage sites, community education projects, environmental health and safety training programmes in industry or environmental projects within government departments or the NGO sector.

Candidates at this level will be required to design, organise, evaluate and improve original environmental learning programmes.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Design an original environmental learning programme
  • Organise implementation of the environmental learning programme
  • Critically evaluate and improve the environmental learning programme

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The candidate will be required to demonstrate an FETC or RPL equivalent in order to gain access to the National Diploma in Environmental Education, Training and Development Practice (EETDP) (NQF Level 5) for which this is a core unit standard.

This unit standard assumes competence in a number of level 4 and 5 EETDP unit standards, including:
  • Fulfil administrative requirements of an environmental learning programme or action project
  • Reflect on own facilitation performance as an environmental education practitioner
  • Identify and describe learning processes
  • Identify and support learners with special needs
  • Demonstrate knowledge of environmental education goals, principles and methods and their appropriateness in different contexts
  • Implement and evaluate an environmental learning programme
  • Review a variety of approaches to learning, teaching and evaluation

The candidate should work towards this unit standard concurrently with the following Level 5 EETDP unit standards:
  • Critically evaluate a range of environmental learning programmes in different contexts
  • Develop original learning support materials for an environmental learning programme
  • Manage a learning environment appropriately for a learner group
  • Develop learning programmes to enhance participation of learners with special needs
  • Investigate options for improved environmental management and sustainable living

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Practitioners credited with this unit standard, in addition to being able to plan and implement an existing environmental learning programme, will also be able to develop an original environmental learning programme. The environmental learning programme should promote a positive environmental ethic and action for a better environment.

The equivalent unit standard at level 5 on the NQF requires the practitioner to take responsibility for his or her role in implementing an environmental learning programme. This unit standard, on the other hand, requires the practitioner to take full responsibility for implementation of the environmental learning programme as a whole. This may include briefing others involved in presenting the learning programme, and organising its implementation.

Having gained experience in reflecting critically on their own practice, this unit standard enables the learner to evaluate and improve the learning programme based on feedback obtained from colleagues and others.
