PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to set out, cut and assemble timber roof trusses in accordance with illustrated configurations, National Building Regulations, safety legislation and within prescribed timeframes.

This competence complements the other carpentry competencies and contributes to the development of a professional community of Carpentry practitioners, who are able to use Science and Technology responsibly and cost-effectively. It should result in improved quality and service delivery in Carpentry.The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    The typical scope of this unit standard is:

    The learner is required to demonstrate competence in manufacturing roof trusses with the following configurations: howe truss, gable roof truss, hip truss, hip rafter, valley rafter, valley jack, nail plate roof truss.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA, for "the National Certificate in Construction carpentry".
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA.
  • CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

    Identify and solve problems and make decisions using critical and creative thinking.
  • Identify timber size, stock length, grade and type for manufacturing the specified roof trusses and determine the quantities to be ordered.

    Organise and manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order to ensure that the manufacture of roof trusses is carried out effectively and the cost to company for the frequent replacement of tools and equipment is minimised.
  • Maintain a neat, clean and tidy work area.
  • Plan work so that roof trusses are manufactured within the specified deadlines.

  • Check template measurements against working drawing specifications to ensure completed roof trusses are manufactured according to size.

  • Confirm your understanding of all requirements specified for the design of the roof with the client/architect before commencing with the work at hand so as to minimise future delays that might be caused because this work has to be redone.
  • Communicate in a clear and audible manner when issuing instructions to team members so that all verbal instructions are clearly understood and can be carried out as required.

    Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environments and the health of others.
  • Use conversion tables to calculate structural strength.
  • Use the appropriate connecting devices and fasteners for securing roof trusses.
  • Check the safety and security of scaffolding at the beginning of each new work day to minimise accident or injury to yourself and other team members.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems, by recognising that problem solving contexts do not exist in isolation.
  • Ensure that materials, tools and equipment used to manufacture roof trusses is safely and securely stored and protected on the building site to minimise the risk of theft, accident or injury to site personnel or visitors to the building site.
