PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work or intend to work within a large process operation in the chemical or similar industry, and seek recognition for skills essential for operating within a chemical system.

Those learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to contribute to the maintenance of a system, pertaining to the chemical industry.

For the purpose of this standard the following is understood as a system:
  • Equipment operated in combination to achieve a desired result in a chemical or related process operation
  • Operating a system included the integrated operation of the equipment that makes up the system


    The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Explain the role of an operator in the maintenance function
  • Prepare the system for maintenance
  • Prepare the work area for maintenance
  • Accept system back after maintenance is completed

  • Learners working towards the full qualification will have demonstrated competence against the unit standards in the National Certificate in Chemical Equipment Operations - NQF Level 2 or equivalent

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the system for maintenance. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Site procedures include permit to work procedures, isolating procedures, flushing procedures, draining, venting and purging and flushing procedures.
  • This unit standard is limited to competency being achieved in any ten of the following nominated systems: distillation towers, absorbers, molecular sieves, extractor column, fluidised reactor, fixed bed reactor, batch reactor, regenerators, pressure vessels, kettle heat exchanger, furnace fired/natural draught, flares, fire/water tube boilers, refrigeration units, soot blowers, evaporators, steam turbines, de super heater, water softening systems, leaching equipment, liquid extraction equipment, separator, ejectors, extruders, scrubbers, material forming systems, materials handling systems. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Equipment to work on is identified for maintenance personnel and appropriate personnel are notified about equipment to be prepared and are advised promptly of significant delays. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The permit to work procedures are followed and the permits are cancelled if conditions are adversely changed or violated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Isolation procedures for all pertinent items of equipment is explained and correct items of equipment are isolated from process and energy source. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Abnormal occurrences during isolation, venting, purging, draining or flushing are identified, described and equipment is drained, flushed, purged, vented and then isolated according to procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare the work area for maintenance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Work areas are cleared of obstructions and the work area is prepared as specified by the permit to work procedures and entry is controlled. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Hazardous materials to be removed are identified and hazardous material is removed from the area. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. How hazardous conditions can arise in previously cleared and prepared area is described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Any equipment that could be adversely affected by maintenance activities is securely shielded. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Work area identified as hazardous is cordoned off when work presents a hazard to others, and when required by procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Permits are cancelled when conditions are adversely changed or violated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Appropriate personnel are informed of work area preparation and promptly advised of significant delays and of further information as requested.

    Accept system back after maintenance is completed.

    5. System is checked to confirm integrity before accepting back.
