PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to handle glasswork for aluminium systems in a safe and efficient manner, which will contribute towards the overall efficiency of the organisation. This competence will enable the learner to identify the different types of glass; handle and store glass; perform glass cutting, edging and sandblasting and perform glazing of finished aluminium goods. This will ensure that breakages and stoppages are kept to a minimum and equipment is used in accordance with safe work practices. This competence will advance the learner's own expertise and employability in both the construction sector and other related jobs.

    Identify the different types of glass. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Includes obscure/patterned glass, wire reinforced, laminated, toughened, monolithic and mirror glass.

    The different types of glass are identified in terms of their variety.

    Handle and store glass with care.

    The risks associated with the handling of glass are identified and explained with examples.

    The correct and safe storage procedures for glass are demonstrated with examples.

    Glass is edged safely and accurately using pneumatic grinding tools.

  • Glass includes bevelled glass, arris glass, polished glass and bright glass.
  • Pneumatic tools includes grinders and mini grinders.

    Glass is sandblasted safely and accurately using pneumatic sandblasting tools.

    Glass includes bevelled glass, arris glass, polished glass and bright glass.

    Perform glazing of finished aluminium goods.

    Butterfly is fitted to beading. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Glass is positioned with the help of setting blocks in accordance with manufacturing procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Beading is cut and fitted with accuracy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Wedge rubber is cut and fitted with accuracy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    U-channel gasket is accurately and correctly fitted. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
