PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable to assess the condition of an undercarriage of earthmoving equipment and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    Discuss and explain the function and operation of undercarriage components. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Undercarriage components include sprockets, idlers, rollers, chains, track plates, track frames and pins and bushes.

    The function and operation of the undercarriage is explained in logical order of operation.

    The undercarriage components are identified and their uses are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect and prepare the undercarriage for assessment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Inspect includes visual and physical inspections for defects and deviations.
  • Visual inspection includes checking for loose and broken bolts, leaks, distortion, cracks and wear.
  • Physical inspection includes to lift the machine and check for worn pins and loose components.
  • Prepare includes clean and park the earthmoving equipment on a level and stable surface and selecting the appropriate tools and measuring equipment.

    The undercarriage inspection process is explained in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The undercarriage is inspected for assessment in accordance with workplace procedures.

    The importance of conducting regular undercarriage assessment is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The undercarriage is prepared in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Measure and assess the undercarriage component for wear and record the findings. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Measure includes the use of electronic and/or mechanical equipment such as micrometers, thermometers, callipers, measuring tapes and go-no-go gauge.
