PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for controlling the quality of limestone stockpiles.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the components in limestone stockpiles.
  • Prepare for production start-up.
  • Perform on-line analysis.
  • Control stockpile quality.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard refers to the building of stockpiles in limestone quarries or aggregate plants. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of components in limestone stockpiles, their individual qualities and combinations for specific products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various components in the limestone stockpile are identified with respect to the relevant mix of raw materials used in the manufacturing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The qualities of different types of limestone are described with respect to production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The various critical chemical components of limestone are described with respect to their impact on the manufacturing process. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Critical chemical components must include the following:
  • Limestone Saturation Factor (LSF).
  • Magnesium carbonate.
  • Total alkali content.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The impact of variances in limestone quality and size distribution is explained with respect to the effect on blending efficiency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The different types of stockpiling and the appropriate reclaiming techniques are described with respect to production requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Stockpile handling methods must include the following:
  • Chevron.
  • Cone.
  • Horizontal layer.
  • Circular.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is selected, checked and used in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The quality control mechanism is made ready in accordance with the relevant quality management procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Quality control mechanisms must include the following:
  • Computer algorithm.
  • Spreadsheet calculation control.
  • Manual calculation.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The state of readiness of the stockpile control system is communicated to production personnel in accordance with specified requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform on-line analysis of stockpile samples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Samples of limestone going to the pile are collected as per the relevant sampling procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Must include the following:
  • Belt samples.
  • Stream samples.
  • Auto sampling.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Samples are prepared for analysis in accordance with the relevant sample preparation procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Samples are analysed in accordance with the relevant sample analysis procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Analysis methods must include the following:
  • XRF.
  • AA.
  • Photometry.
  • Total carbonates (wet analysis).
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safe work procedures are followed in accordance with specified requirements.

    Results are captured into quality control mechanisms in accordance with specified procedure.

    Deviations from the standard requirements are assessed in accordance with production parameters.

    Quality parameters are determined for the next control period in accordance with production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Parameters (or limits) are communicated to appropriate personnel in accordance with specified requirements.

    Stockpile is built to quality specifications within constraints of time and total tonnage of pile.
