This unit standard reflects the skills required to:

  • Purge and changeover from one material or colour to another.
  • Maintain machines as specified.
  • Ensure required documentation is completed and stored appropriately.

    It also reflects the understanding of:
  • The basic principles underpinning the design and construction of the printing and manufacture of packaging production equipment.
  • The basics of and variations in control systems.
  • The purpose of procedures in the context of equipment operations.

    This unit standard would be assessed in the following printing and packaging processes e.g.:

    Printing:
  • Letterpress.
  • Screen printing.

    Manufacture of packaging, with or without in-line printing processes:

    The skill, the knowledge and the values reflected in this unit standard form part of the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in Printing and Manufacture of Packaging NQF Level 3. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and level of this unit standard is indicated by range statements related to the specific outcomes. The work reflected in this unit standard is normally performed semi-autonomously under minimal supervision. The work will be guided by relevant worksite procedures, manufacturers' specifications and safety, health and environmental legislation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Monitor equipment and material, conduct quality checks and resolve problems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Quality checks include monitoring of product mass, dimensions, colour or any other critical part of the product specification.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Quality checks are conducted on the equipment and materials in accordance with job specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Instruments, measuring equipment and measuring gauges are selected related to the type and nature of the product and used in accordance with specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Common processing problems related to the process or the product are identified and dealt with in accordance with set standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform make ready, start up and shutdown procedures on the printing or packaging equipment.

    Machine operations are performed according to procedures.

    Deviations are identified and appropriate corrective action is taken to minimise downtime or production losses.

    Deviations are restricted to common processing problems related to the process or the product. Corrective action can include adjustments to printing or packaging equipment, or calling for specific assistance.

    Information related to printing or packaging equipment and operations is reported and recorded in accordance with organisational procedures.

    The workstation is kept clean and safe. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Prepare for and perform changeover procedures. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Change over procedures includes wash up of rollers and pumping systems, removal of ink, coatings adhesives and chemicals, flushing out and disposal of waste and unwanted materials; changes of substrate, construction or colour; in complex packaging manufacturing lines this activities relates to one unit within the line or process.

  • The manner in which operations are carried out includes the control of spillages, prevention of oil and water leaks, energy efficiency.
  • All operations are carried out with due care for the equipment, the materials and the quality of the final product.

    Waste material and scrap from the various processes is collected and disposed of according to procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Disposal includes segregation of waste and non-conforming product.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The key concepts and principles related to printing or packaging equipment and operations are discussed and explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Concepts include, productivity, meeting production standards, procedures and their purpose; housekeeping; safety; working with others; Awareness of costs, efficiency and waste control.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Printing and packaging equipment and operations are described and explained relative to application in practice.
