PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to: understand the definition and theory of volunteerism; identify, profile and orientate volunteers. Learners will be able to monitor and offer support to volunteers working within a community recreation context. The learner will have a good understanding of ways in which to maintain good relations to sustain a volunteer programme.

On completion of this unit standard the qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theory of volunteerism.
  • Profile, identify and orientate potential volunteers.
  • Monitor and support the volunteer.
  • Maintain good relations with the volunteer for sustainability.

    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in numeracy and literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A profile of the volunteer against the set of criteria for the selection of volunteers is created and defined. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Potential volunteers are selected in terms of the set criteria. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Volunteers are screened and recommendations are forwarded to the supervisor/manager/officer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The personal details of all volunteers are captured on a database. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The selected volunteers are informed about the induction process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The volunteers are given an orientation of the organization.

    Organization refers to the following: staff, communication channels, support networks, administration procedures, legal requirements, work environment, equipment, training, reward system.

    Important documents such as indemnities, contract, organizational contact details, and training manual are prepared for volunteer. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Monitor and support the volunteer during the facilitation of a programme within a community. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The terms and conditions of the contract are explained to the volunteer to ensure compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Regular meetings are scheduled with the volunteer to ensure proper work conduct. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Regular feedback is provided to the volunteer and to the supervisor/officer/manager. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Project reports are collected from the volunteers and submitted to the supervisor/officer/manager. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Maintain good relations with the volunteer to ensure sustainability of the recreation activity.

    The incentive package and reward system are clearly defined and clarified.
