Learners who demonstrate competence as described in the outcomes of this unit standard will be able to explain the storage of liquids, solids and gases in a processing environment.

The qualifying learner is able to:

    The hazards associated with bulk storage are identified and described in terms of processing applications.

    Safety devices and safety procedures applied to storage of materials are described according to procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance and methods to maintain stored product quality are explained in terms of process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The importance and methods to minimise storage losses are explained in terms of process applications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe different storage methods for liquids. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Liquid storage methods are identified and described in accordance with industry requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Storage methods include horizontal tanks, vertical tanks, ponds, bunkers, bulk containers, intermediate bulk containers, drums and small containers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The principles of the different liquid storage methods and the addition and removal of liquid are stated in terms of process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Advantages and disadvantages of different liquid storage methods are listed in terms of process applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Freehand drawings are used to explain the features of different roof configurations used in bulk storage tanks. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Roof configurations include floating roofs, conical roofs, dome roofs and open roofs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Freehand drawings are used to explain the purpose and configuration of other features in bulk storage tanks. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Features include tank bottom configuration, inlet and outlet configurations, sumps, drainage arrangements, sample points, mixing attachments, cooling and heating features, recirculation systems, ventilation, access points, level gauges.

    Corrosion protection options are described in terms of process applications.

    Gas storage methods are listed and explained in accordance with industry requirements.
