PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of steering systems, components and parts, to prepare and position the vehicle and to diagnose and repair system faults and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • Checking and adjusting steering geometry.

    All work is performed with little or no supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

  • Read and interpret includes the specific technical data, tools and equipment required and the type of system identified.
  • Type of system includes linkage (worm gear) or rack-and-pinion. Can be manual or power assisted.

    Technical data is sourced in accordance with operational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Appropriate tools and equipment are obtained in accordance with the job instructions.

    The consequences of not using the correct technical data, tools and equipment are explained in terms of the impact on the job.

    The type of steering system is identified in terms of the job instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain the function and operation of a steering system. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Function include the precise control of the front wheel direction, the correct amount of effort to turn the wheels, transmit road feel to the drivers hands, absorb most of the shock going to the steering wheel and allows for suspension action.
  • Operation includes the operation of the various components in the system. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The functions of a steering system are explained in terms of the process of providing control over a vehicle's direction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The operation of steering systems is explained in terms of the key differences between particular systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The function of the suspension system is explained in terms of the effect on the steering system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The implications of the steering system malfunctioning are explained in terms of vehicle control and safety. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Inspect and determine the condition of the steering system, system problems and causes. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • System problems include steering wheel play, hard steering and steering system noise.
  • Steering system noise includes worn parts, unlubricated bearings, loose parts, slipping belts and low power steering fluid level.
  • Causes include worn parts, lack of lubrication and incorrect adjustments.

    Steering system problems are identified in accordance with repair manual procedures.

    Component and part wear is identified in terms of their causes and remedies.

    Faults are diagnosed in terms of their causes and the effect on the steering system. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Diagnose and repair steering system components and test the operation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Diagnose includes visual and manual/physical inspection of the steering components and parts for defects.
  • Components and parts includes steering wheel, steering shaft, steering column, steering gearbox, steering linkages, ball sockets, pinion rack and gear, ignition switch and locking mechanism, locking steering wheel, collapsible steering column, power steering pumps and hoses, power steering reservoirs, universal joints.
  • Repair includes the removal of faulty components and parts and fit replacement components and parts and bleeding of the system.
  • Test includes visual, manual and physical checks and operational checks.

    Steering system components are diagnosed and parts are repaired or replaced in accordance with repair manual procedures.

    The operational condition of the steering system is checked in accordance with repair manual requirements.

    Work is conducted in accordance with flat rate time schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for repairing or replacing parts are given in terms of cost and safety factors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Implications of incorrect diagnosis is explained in terms of cost and safety.

    The system is diagnosed and repaired without incident, accident or injury.

    No damage is caused to the steering system, equipment and tools.

    All repair manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after the task are adhered to.

    Restore work area and complete and process documentation.

  • Restoring work area includes disposal of hazardous materials, tools and equipment packed away.
  • Documentation includes completing job cards, check lists and reports.
