PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to carry out simple repair tasks in a stable yard environment. It will ensure the learner is able to assist in the maintenance of the stable yard and contribute to its upkeep and functional state. Achieving this unit standard will enhance the employability of the learner or provide entrepreneurial opportunities in the community.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and determining nature of repair to be undertaken in a stable yard.
  • Carrying out minor repairs in a stable yard.
  • Repairing cracked and broken concrete.
  • Repairing a fence and gate in a stable yard.
  • Caring for stable yard tools and equipment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at ABET Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical literacy at ABET Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Stable yard will include but not limited to stable yards, barns, stables, paddock, exercise arena. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify and determine the nature of the minor repair to be undertaken in a stable yard. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Minor repairs will include stable fittings' doors, hinges, taps, sliding doors and barriers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The stable yard is examined and the type and extent of damages to be repaired are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Repair requirements are determined in a given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Repair options and alternatives are identified and evaluated for feasibility according to organisational constraint. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Authority is obtained to effect repair. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Carry out minor repairs in a stable yard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate tools, equipment and fitting materials are selected according to the repair to be undertaken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal protective equipment is used as required in accordance with the relevant safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Repair is completed according to worksite and safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools and equipment are packed away in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Maintain the stable yard on a regular basis according to worksite procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Minor repairs include but are not limited to cracked and broken concrete, the gate and the fence.

    Care for stable yard tools and equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Unsafe or damaged stable yard tools and equipment which may impact on the environment, are identified, reported and their use discontinued according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Simple repairs, maintenance and care tasks are carried out according to worksite procedures and in an environmentally responsible manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Stable yard tools and equipment are stored in accordance with worksite procedures for future use. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
