PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare for handover and take over the watch in an engine room. They are able to read and record the temperatures, pressures and fluid levels to ensure the effective running of an engine room and report out of line areas and possible problems. The learner is also able to assist in dealing with defects in the machinery as well as manual operation of automated machinery when required. They are also able to describe and apply methods to ensure the vessel operates in an environmentally friendly manner.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Reporting for a watch in an engine room.
  • Reading and recording temperatures, pressures and fluid levels.
  • Describing the procedure for dealing with common defects in the propelling and auxiliary machinery.
  • Assisting in the manual operation of automated machinery.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of basic environmental protection procedures.

    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • In compliance with current Maritime Legislation, Codes and Practices, the scope of this unit standard covers knowledge of the terms in the machinery spaces, basic construction and operation of equipment and propelling machinery as required by an engine room watchkeeper, on board a seagoing vessel.
  • This unit standard involves SAMSA's draft amendments to the Code for SA Maritime Qualifications; Study matrices and syllabuses for fishing and marine motorman qualifications - Engineering Knowledge, Module 1, Watchkeeping or equivalent.
  • This unit standard refers to the Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) (Fishing and Marine Motorman Qualifications) Regulations - 2006 and any amendments thereafter.

    Report for a watch in an engine room. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Handover watch duties in an engine room are performed according to accepted principles and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Methods that contribute to the safe and efficient performance of an engine room are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The wearing of the required personal protective equipment is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of all communications prior to and during watch keeping duties is described with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Read and record temperatures, pressures and fluid levels. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Readings should include but are not limited to exhaust gas temperatures, cooling water temperatures and pressure, lubricating oil pressure, sump level, fuel oil service tank level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Temperatures, pressures and fluid levels are read and recorded in the required engine room watchkeeping logbook. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The settings, upper and lower limits of temperatures, pressures and fluid levels are described in accordance with operating requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reason for the normal temperatures, pressures and fluid levels being what they are is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Methods to read and record the temperatures, pressures and fluid levels are described in accordance with standards and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The initial and follow up corrective action required if abnormal temperatures, pressures and fluid levels are found is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The importance of recording these deviations and corrective action is explained with examples of the implications of not doing so. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The legal implications of the administration of the logbook are described with examples.

    Describe the procedure for dealing with common defects in the propelling and auxiliary machinery.

  • High or low exhaust temperatures, low or dropping lubricating oil pressure, low or high sump oil levels, contaminated sump oil, black or white smoke, low or high fresh water cooling temperatures, low header tank levels, high lubricating oil or bearing temperatures.

    Classification of garbage and the correct methods of disposal are described with examples.

    Methods to avoid discharge of oil into the sea during fuel transfer operations and while pumping bilges are explained with examples.
